Air cargo between Miami (MIA) and Bogota (BOG).
Based on the information of the MIA airport Cargo Hub https://lnkd.in/e_2geFie, in 2021, Colombia was one of the top trading partners from Latin America with 310233 Tons (import and export) of cargo. The exports from MIA to Colombia were 47993 Tons and the principal products were Industrial Machinery / Parts (3806 Tons), Computers and Peripherals (3360 Tons), Plastics (2861 Tons), Telecommunications Equipment (2753 Tons) and Vehicle Parts / Tires (2597 Tons).
If we check on the Colombian side, DIAN shares very detailed statistics at https://lnkd.in/e7XeQyGm and you can find that the imports via air from 2021 were 219395 Tons and that BOG Airports received 202672 Tons.
Based on both statistics, we can conclude that the imports from MIA to BOG were nearly a quarter (23.6% to be exact) of all the cargo that El Dorado received in 2021, this number showing the importance of the cargo between both cities and the strong business relations that they have.
However, if you add the tons of the principal export products, you can see that there are only 15377 Tons, near a third of the total. What kind of cargo are the other 32616 Tons? My educated guess based on our courier shipments from 2021 (1525 tons) is that between 15 to 20 thousand tons were from the courier (parcel, express shipments and mail) industry. I cannot find any related statistics yet, but I think that the volume of the courier industry is very important for the US-Latin America market and its relevance must be taken into consideration. Our industry moves more tons than the top 5 products exported to BOG combined! I checked the numbers from other Latin American countries and there are similar trends. I think it;s time to show the importance of the parcel industry to the Governments and the general public.
